To compare between Chinese and western culture is a grand topic. Starting from theoretical analysis, this course transits to artistic experience and ends in daily cultural contact, aiming to lead students to appreciate the brilliance of cultures at all levels. This comparison is conducive to the forming of overall tolerance and embrace of cultures so that we can break the barriers of conventions and link China with the world in various fields.
The deep-rooted differences between Chinese and Western cultures are analyzed from the perspective of myth tracing and cultural belief. When these differences are projected into the field of art, they form different aesthetic experiences in different cultures. What is invaluable is that we can always find some convergence points among them. Chinese and Western literature enlighten wisdom, edify sentiment and pass on history in their own wonderful ways. In daily cultural practice, this course focuses on food culture to help students have better intuitive touch of the two cultures.
The course is mostly taught in English, with a small amount of Chinese. Students are encouraged to have flexibility and confidence in transition between English and Chinese in terms of various cultural fields. The improvement of language skills will help students to re-examine the beauty of traditional Chinese culture from the perspective of another language, as well as to form independent and creative thinking in cross-cultural communications.
