How does online learning work?

Most online courses are taught primarily through short (mostly 5–20 mins) pre-recorded video lectures. You watch these videos on a self-paced or weekly schedule when it is convenient for you. Some courses are text-based. Many are a combination of videos and text.
Some courses (or parts of them) can be downloaded to your device for offline learning, while others are only available while connected to the internet.
Many courses also have student discussion forums, homework/assignments, relevant links to explore, and online quizzes or exams. Some courses offer a free or paid certificate of completion.
Class Central also lists courses and educational video playlists that do not include these features.
Class Central's Help Center represents our best effort to answer the most common questions new learners face. It may not be completely accurate in every circumstance.
