Tourism is composed of public, private, and not-for-profit components interested in tourism development, new products, destination marketing, economic benefits, and future sustainability. These tourism interests have broad impacts on community life and need criteria and guidelines to help define and plan the future direction of the tourism industry in order to provide quality tourism products and services. Tourism planning aims at setting guidelines for the development of quality tourism products and for improving the quality of life of the local citizen at any given destination.
This course provides the foundations of tourism planning. It examines the nature and characteristics of tourism planning and development, the principles of tourism planning, the tourism planning process, and issues in tourism planning. It is based not only on current concepts and theories but also on practical applications. Tourism planning is examined from a sustainable development perspective and many cases from China are used to describe the challenges as well as successes of tourism planning processes.
The course is delivered in English. It aims to provide a foundation of tourism planning knowledge by introducing concepts, theories, principles and methods used in tourism planning.
