Overview






There are altogether 8 units focusing on 8 topics, including Education, Technology, Social problems, Culture, Health, Workplace, Economy, and Nature, which are the most common themes for people to talk about in communication, and are also very often tested on in English Proficiency tests.


Each unit consists of two parts:



  • Part I Critical reading/writing skills


There are four critical reading skills lectures, including how to identify facts and opinions, how to read for the key words, how to read for the key sentences, and how to read for the key arguments, through which you will learn how to read a passage critically.


There are also have four critical writing skills lectures, including how to choose words, how to write sentences, how to write paragraphs, and how to write a three-paragraph essay, by which you will learn to build your confidence in writing and fulfill a writing task successfully.



  • Part II Reading for writing


For each unit, you will read a passage about the unit theme with two writing tasks to complete: a summary writing and a paragraph/essay writing. To help you with the tasks, we have designed four scaffolding exercises: Chunks, Translations, Questions, and finally Summary. Now that you have read the passage, learned the chunks and processed the ideas, you are armed with both ideas and language to complete the writing tasks.  


After learning this course, you will be able to write a three-paragraph essay on the above mentioned 8 topics with clarity and logic.
