This course is one of the main courses in students majored in biology and the relating majors. This course introduces the general discipline of microbiology: the morphology and structure of microbiology, microbial nutrition and media, microbial growth and its control, metabolism, genetics, infection and immunity, ecology and classification and identification of microbes. Through taking this course, students will understand the biological characteristics (morphology, physiology and genetics) of common microbial strains; and master laboratory skills, such as culture media preparation and sterile and pure culture techniques, isolation of microbial strains from nature.
The overall goal of this course is to provide students with a working knowledge of microbiology and biology. Through taking this course, students will learn how to read the literature in the field and how to find answers to their future questions. This course provides an integrated understanding applicable for students aiming for careers in research, teaching and industry.
