The course of Historic Building Protection Design is for the fourth year undergraduates majoring in architecture. It is one of the architectural design modules set up for senior undergraduates to meet the requirements of training professional talents. It consists of two parts: theoretical knowledge and design practice.
The first four chapters mainly focus on theoretical teaching, including the concepts and values of historic buildings, the concepts and development of conservation, restoration and reuse, and the related theories and principles of the relationship between historic building and city.
The last two chapters focus on design practice, combining with a large number of cases of domestic and foreign historic building protection and reuse design, and introducing different protection and reuse strategies. At last, the drawing expressions of historic building protection and reuse plan is explained in detail with specific cases.
With the study of this course, students can understand the basic forms of historic buildings and their protection design characteristics. With the further study of historic building reuse, students are expected to find practical methods for the protection and utilization of historic buildings.
The course concentrates on the main points. With case analysis students can understand intuitively the methods and key points of historic building protection design. With the investigation of protection and reuse scheme design and then with written reports by students, the course contents are effectively consolidated and absorbed, which is helpful for students in their graduation project and future work design. The course might be difficult, needing comprehensive architectural theories and design knowledge, and good design skills.
