Background

The Northwest University- College of Chemistry and Materials Science in Xi’an has developed a learning course on "Thesis Research and Writing". The purpose of offering this course is to enhance student's proficiency of academic research and communication.

 

Objectives of the course

The objective of this learning course on thesis research and writing is to help students understand the value of scientific research and know the fundamentals of thesis writing. This course is based on the general practices of thesis research and writing in the universities and colleges in China and abroad. Some specific rules, however, may apply for different institutions.

The usage of English language has become significant in academic community. English has been considered to be the first global Lingua Franca. It has been an international language of communication, business, science, information technology, entertainment and so on. The most recent and the most sophisticated discoveries and inventions in science and technology are communicated in English language. Similarly, major communication platforms such as journals and conferences follow English language.

Keeping view this reality, this course has been developed in English language, to help non-native speakers write their thesis in English medium and research articles thereafter.

 

Course Structure

This course of study on Thesis Research and Writing is divided into three major parts: i) Understanding of science and scientific approaches, ii) Components of thesis and thesis research proposal, and iii) Presentation of research outcomes and sharing. These are described in under three parts here.
