This course aims at cultivating graduate students' ability to write and publish academic papers in English. It systematically teaches students (1) how to write English academic papers in appropriate formulaic styles required by different SCI/SSCI journals; (2) how to identify and revise various grammatical, idiomatic, and syntactic errors in writing so as to develop semantic cohesion and cohesiveness; (3) how to avoid plagiarism and academic misconduct in writing, (4) how to submit and revise a manuscript or an abstract for publication or for conference attendance; (5) how to make English presentations for academic purposes, etc.
Topics of the course also include the traps and tips for writing a good abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results and discussion. Additionally, it also discusses common myths about writing good academic papers in English, particularly about writing translation-based English for academic purposes. Moreover, the course provides many examples of poor or inappropriate English writing as well as ways to revise them appropriately. As the first English-only course offered by the Graduate School of the Capital Normal University, this course hopes to greatly enhance graduate students’ capability to publish their academic works in English for both local and international students.
