1. Course Introduction
Advanced English, a core course for English majors, consists of Advanced EnglishⅠand Advanced EnglishⅡ. This course is offered 2 semesters online for English juniors, intermediate and advanced level English learners. The mission of this course is to help students gain “Global thinking, global vision” experience and develop the ability to “Feed the mind, feel the world”.
Advanced EnglishⅡ, with 4 credits and 64 teaching periods, is a post-course for Advanced EnglishⅠ.Usually, it is open online in the spring semester. Following the teaching philosophy of “Pre-reading Activities→While-reading Activities→After-reading Activities” and in combination with theoretical teaching and language practice, this course aims to further consolidate and improve students’ comprehensive English skills, advanced English reading, stylistic analysis, grammatical rhetoric and writing, and problem solving.
Through the study of this course, students can further widen their scope of knowledge and further develop their ability to analyze and comprehend famous English writings, logical thinking ability and independent thinking ability. What’s more, the study of this course may help students further deepen their understanding of society and life, further improve their sensitivity of cultural differences between China and the west, and further consolidate and enhance their comprehensive English skills. Finally, the study of this course may help students have better grades in tests such as TEM8, IELTS, TOEFL, PTE.
2. Pre-knowledge
The Cultures of English-speaking Countries, Integrated English (Intensive Reading), English Grammar, English Reading and Writing, Advanced EnglishⅠetc.
3. Course Team
Our course team is composed of 5 teachers who have rich experience in teaching Integrated English and Advanced English courses for English majors.
They are Prof. Zhao Yingji, Miss Li Qing, Miss Hong Xiaoxia, Mr. Shi Mingming and Prof. Xu Yi.
4. Objectives of the Course
Objective 1: Students can understand the role of this course and master the law of English learning at advanced stage; Students can consolidate word formation knowledge and grammatical knowledge so that they can do well in paraphrasing difficult words, phrases, clauses and sentences in English, and can further improve performance in the use of grammatical and linguistic knowledge as well as pragmatic knowledge.
Objective 2: Students can get familiar with the role and features of different English styles; Students can master the principal English rhetorical devices and the theories and methods of text analysis; Students can develop the ability to analyze, review and appreciate a text from the perspectives of stylistics, characterization, scenario description, historical and cultural background; Students can employ a variety of cohesive devices in essay writing proficiently to state opinions clearly and organize the passage well; Students can establish correct outlooks on the world, the life and the value, to establish correct philosophy of gain employment and develop good professional ethics.
5. Content of the Course
We have designed 7 teaching units for this course, i.e.: Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 4, Unit 5, Unit 7, Unit 8 and Unit 9 of Book 6 by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. Each unit is composed of 3 modules: pre-reading activities, while-reading activities and after-reading activities.
6. Course Book
The course book we use for this course is Integrated English Book 6 (2nd edition) published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press in 2013, whose editor-in-chief is Zhang Chunbai.
7. Resources of the Course
For the sake of students’ “Global thinking, global vision” experience and the ability to “Feed the mind, feel the world”, this course provides fruitful teaching videos, audios and testing resources, where students can have a general understanding of famous English writings related to politics, economics, social sciences, linguistics, literature, education, philosophy, law, religion and natural science.
8. Evaluation of the Course
For the sake of students’ self-access learning and evaluation of each unit, we have uploaded a variety of language practice and tests, involving vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading and translation.
After completing this course, students may test themselves with Final Test of this course online.
