Overview

 Welcome to MOOC "Practice of Maritime Administrations and Translation". Our MOOC is a course characterized by the combination of theory with practice in the shipping field and it is particularly designed for post-graduate students majoring in translation related to the nationwide marine industry. Both undergraduate and postgraduate levels students majoring in marine-related majors can also learn relevant maritime English vocabulary and understand the historical background of shipping via learning.

     The aim of this MOOC is to assist students with comprehension of Shipping Culture and Shipping Management Knowledge, and to master the methods and approaches of English-Chinese translations regarding shipping-related materials, and to familiarize themselves with the fundamental theories of translation studies, and to cultivate high level translation talents in the building of BRI, a strong and prosperous transportation country, and in the building of maritime powerful country.

      This MOOC is composed of 11 chapters and 78 lessons, taking 64 hours on-line learning. The MOOC learning is in synchronization with the paper textbook "Shipping Management Practice and Translation Practice". The content highlights the characteristics of shipping and covers nine aspects, namely "port, shipping, vessel, management, personnel, economy, law, language and culture".

      Specifically, "port" refers to seaports; "shipping" refers to maritime transportation; "vessel" refers to ships; "management" refers to shipping management; "personnel" refers to shipping personnel; "economy" refers to shipping economics; "law" refers to international maritime conventions and domestic maritime regulations; "language" refers to Maritime English, which means the language used in the marine-related fields; and "culture" refers to shipping culture.

      The framework of the course includes two major parts: background knowledge and translation practice. Additionally, the MOOC discussion area is open, where teachers and students can interact and exchange ideas on the application of translation theories, overcoming related translation difficulties, and improving the quality of actual translated texts. This helps students in effective application of theory in translation practice.
