English Lexicology

Swinburne University of Technology via XuetangX

Overview

English lexicology is a course for students majoring in English. It is also suitable for non-English majors to learn and expand English vocabulary. This course mainly deals with the related theories of lexical culture, morphology, semantics and pragmatics. Through the course study, students can understand the forms and structures of English words, word formation, sense relations, internal relationship between words, and the application of words and phrases,  so as to master the basic laws of English vocabulary, thus rapidly expanding vocabulary and improving lexical application ability. At the same time, the students 'interest in language research will be cultivated to lay a good foundation for their further study and research in related fields.

This course has the following features.

The first feature is  practical teaching content. Although it is a professional course, it is not limited to theoretical knowledge. The lexical theory is integrated into lexical learning and application, and the relation between words and the application of words in specific situations are emphasized.

The second feature is task-driven teaching method. Starting with the practical problems of lexical learning and driven by tasks or problems, the students are inspired to think and dig up the inherent laws of lexical learning, and the students are guided to apply lexical theory to language practice.

The third feature is interactive teaching process. The topics and discussions are easy to understand, suitable for students at different levels to think independently. Interactive discussions help students to perfect vocabulary acquisition strategies and improve vocabulary expression ability.

"Without grammar, very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed." The difficulty of vocabulary learning impels people to seek out the regularity of the lexical system. English lexicology provides these useful contents for learners.
