该课程是根据《国家中长期教育改革与发展规划纲要（2010-2020）》、《教育部关于全面提高高等教育质量的若干意见》以及《大学英语教学指南》的精神与要求进行设计、编写。课程旨在培养符合全球化和高等教育国际化发展趋势以及中国新的国家发展战略的大学生英语应具备的能力与素质。本课程从每册书选取最具代表性及特点的6个单元，通过帮助学生阅读符合其认知和情感特点的优秀范文，掌握基本阅读技能和语言基础知识，逐步形成系统的组织和表达思想的能力，同时利用阅读材料所提供的英语语言素材和相关主题知识，培养学生综合使用语言的能力。
