《英美概况》MOOC课程主要针对英语专业学生和英美文化爱好者，是帮助学生了解英美文化的一门简单却必要的入门课程。它旨在丰富学生关于英美国家的知识，增强学生对英美历史与文化的了解，提高学生的跨文化意识。本课程聚焦英美国家的地理、人文、语言、历史和政治体制，尤其是历史，通过讲授、文字、图片、电影、音乐等方式，为学生搭建英美国家历史与文化的系统框架，为英语爱好者提供基础知识平台的同时，主要是为了打破英语专业学生的常规知识记忆模式，提高基础知识的学习效率，通过线上线下的话题讨论、实事辨析，创新课堂活动，实现发散式、探究式、辨析式的翻转课堂模式，从而实现学生对英美国家和现代社会由浅入深的理解。
