Overview
This course helps students improve their use of English by developing their ability to listen, speak, read, and write in English in personal, professional, and social settings.The course attempts to encourage and motivate students to learn English, improve their levels of proficiency in English, and use English in academic and real-world situations by providing lessons, activities, tasks, techniques, and strategies for understanding, communicating, and interacting in English.By the end of the course, students would have not only improved their proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but also gained familiarity with 21st century communication practices such as digital reading and writing, and speaking using digital tools.Acknowledging that digital literacy – speaking, reading, and writing using digital tools is an essential 21st century skill, the course attempts to help students engage with digital tools in order to learn, communicate, and create. Secondly, to maintain a strong focus on facilitating students’ use of English for academic purposes, to their meet social needs, and to cater to their future professional needs, the course has as its target user the Indian undergraduate. A third significant learning gain is that the course uses, recommends, and promotes use of Indian English.On successful completion of the course, students will be able todemonstrate accuracy and fluency in spoken and written communicationmake informed choices about ways to communicate formally and informallyread and comprehend texts and engage with them criticallylisten to and comprehend texts and engage with them criticallyacquire familiarity with a few key interpersonal skills, anddevelop language literacy in the digital medium.
