Overview

ABOUT THE COURSE: Economics of Health and Education will introduce students to the microeconomic foundations of health and education as economic goods. This course will lay emphasis on theory and practice. The focus of this course will be on the developing countries experience with particular reference to India. We will draw knowledge from the larger literature on human capital and human development and understand the linkages and implications. To be able to carry out empirical analyses as an outcome of this course, students will also learn about the current health and education policy of India as well as the most used databases. General lectures on public health and education in India are planned to introduce students to the debates in this field. All candidates interested in understanding the health and education sectors of developing countries such as India are encouraged to enroll.INTENDED AUDIENCE: Undergraduates, Postgraduates, PhD students, Faculty Development ProgrammeINDUSTRY SUPPORT: Non-government Organizations, students desiring to work in international organisations such as International Food Policy Research Institute, World Health Organisation and the like

Week 2:Microeconomic Foundations of Health and Education-1: Demand and supply of health and education; understanding the market for health and education
Week 3: Microeconomic Foundations of Health and Education-2: Health and development; health-income linkages; Complementarities between health and education
Week 4:Health Insurance Market: The standard insurance model; Group insurance and administrative costs; Informal insurance mechanisms
Week 5:Market failures: Social objectives and market failures; Policy response; Financing public expenditures in health and education
Week 6:Returns to education: Private and social returns; Job market signaling; Returns to education in developed and developing countries; Returns to education quality
Week 7:Education and Inequality: Inequalities in educational outcomes; Inequalities by race, gender, ethnicity and immigrant status; Changes over time
Week 8:The State of Public Health in India (General lectures): Primary health; Disease burden in India; Health infrastructure and development; General lecture
