Welcome to Leading StandOut Teams! In this digital coaching experience consisting of eight individual courses, you will be guided through The Marcus Buckingham Company's comprehensive strengths-based approach to leading a team.
We call Leading StandOut Teams a coaching experience quite intentionally, because it incorporates practical stories and examples drawn from our world-class coaches' decades of real-world experience, as well as hands-on application of strengths-based coaching principles that will help you lead your team effectively.
This series is organized around the eight key needs that our research has revealed drive the engagement and performance of teams. Each course is centered on one of these eight needs:

Welcome to Leading StandOut Teams: Putting Strengths to Work! This course will explore and deepen your capacity to identify and communicate where your team members do their best work. We will look at how being aware of and drawing attention to strengths -- more than weaknesses -- will work wonders for your team members' performance and engagement. And we’ll discuss how helping your team members work well with each other will go a long way toward making that their story about work a positive one. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Collaborate with your team members to communicate where they're doing their best work. - Relate your team members' performance and engagement to their individual strengths. - Design ways your team members can work together more effectively based on where they are at their best. Modules Include: One: What They Do Best. Explore and deepen your capacity to identify and communicate where your team members do their best work. Two: Focus on Strengths. Explore how being aware of and drawing attention to strengths -- more than weaknesses -- will work wonders for your team members' performance and engagement. Three: Working with Others. This course will help you craft your story and learn how to get even better at telling stories about purpose that will have a profound impact on your team. Then, we’re going to talk about rituals for keeping your team connected. Last, we will explore what celebration looks like at your company and on your team, and how your team responds to it. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Create and explain in a story-telling format your “Purpose Story.” - Describe the importance of team connections and successfully implement ways to make these connections productive and meaningful. - Design a story-telling format for your “Purpose Story." - Define storytelling and tips to help you share a more compelling story. - Identify challenges, choices, and outcomes in crafting a compelling story. - Apply strengths to your story and construct a final draft. - Compare and contrast rituals vs. Routines. - Identify what celebration looks like at your company and determine how to reward the right behaviors for more of the same. Modules Include: One: Creating Compelling Stories. We'll take a look at how to provide clarity to your team about their roles, and then explore how you as a team leader can provide the information people need to do their jobs well — not just data and guidance, but also your observations about where they’re at their best. This course explores how to get more skilled at inviting, allowing, and supporting team members to stretch beyond their current responsibilities. By the end of the course, you will be able to guide your team members to step out of their comfort zones and grow in using their strengths. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Explore how to get your team members to step out of their comfort zones. - Learn how to intentionally match your team members with projects that enable them to use their strengths. - Expand the definition of what career growth actually involves and help team members know what's next on their career journeys. Modules Include: One: Trying New Things. Become more skilled at inviting, allowing, and supporting team members to stretch beyond their current responsibilities and step out of the comfort zone. Two: Strengths-Based Projects. Explore how to intentionally match your team members up with projects that enable them to use their strengths. Three: Growing Team Members’ Careers. Expand your interpretation of what "career growth" actually involves and provide you with a simple approach to ensure that your team members feel they are moving and shaking and know what's next on their career journey. Welcome to Leading StandOut Teams: Recognizing Team Members! This course will explore the topic of recognition, which includes acknowledgement, attention, and even just noticing the work that’s done. Then we will consider how important timing can be in recognizing your team members. Finally, we're going to ask you to assume your assumptions are wrong. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Describe how recognition plays an important role in a team environment and discover three ways to recognize individuals. - Understand how important timing can be in recognizing your team members. - Learn how to identify what matters most to your team members. Modules Include: One: The Way You Recognize. Explore the topic of recognition, which includes acknowledgement, attention, and even just noticing the work that’s done. It’s not always public, it’s not always in the form of a reward, and it’s not necessarily meant to influence behavior. Two: Timing Recognition. Consider how important timing can be in recognizing your team members. Three: What Matters. Do you know what matters to your team members? Assume your assumptions are wrong. We’ll define what is it that makes your company so special. And we’ll explore the value you, your team, and your company provide to your clients, and how you can keep that front-of-mind to ensure that the people you serve can see the unique value you offer. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Build a detailed vision of the next six months for your team. - Describe what makes your company special and explain how you can make sure your team members feel it in their own ways. - Create a compelling picture of why clients need your company. Modules Include: One: Vision: The Next 6 Months. What does a vision look like for your team, and how does it connect to the vision for your company?
