Overview
The course will introduce students to basic concepts and issues in English Language Teaching. It will explore the history of ELT, mainstream approaches and new trends. Students will be familiarized with such methodologies as Grammar Translation, Audiolingualism, Presentation, Practice and Production, Communication Language Teaching, Task-based Learning, and Content and Language Integrated Learning as well as alternative methods and approaches such as Storyline and Dogme ELT. Students will examine English as an International Language, the Common European Framework of Reference and also developments in English Language Teaching as a Profession such as the qualifications and professional development needed to be a teacher. Finally, the course will consider implications for ELT such as lifelong learning, digital literacy and teaching English online. By the end of the course, students will have a fuller understanding of English Language Teaching and current issues in the sphere.

- 0. Introduction
- 1. Approaches to ELT
- You will watch 3 lectures about different approaches and methods in English language teaching, their keys features, and practical usage. You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.
- 2. Issues in ELT
- You will watch 3 lectures about the status of English as a global lingua franca, the CEFR framework and its importance for ELT and recent developments in ELT as a profession. You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.
- 3. Implications for ELT
- You will watch 3 lectures about the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers of English, digital literacy and the challenges as well as the opportunities associated with teaching English online. You will be provided with a number of short quizzes to check your learning. To expand your knowledge further, you will also be provided with links to additional materials.
