Office 365 migration transfers company data, emails, and calendars to a cloud-based solution. Find out how to avoid common migration pitfalls through an online course.

Some companies host all of their employees’ emails, calendar invites, and contacts via an in-house service. But in the new working world of remote workers having a cloud-based solution is more important than ever. That’s why many companies are choosing to transition to Office 365.

Developers, consultants, or office managers are often tasked with helping the company transition its onsite services to Office 365, which is all online. The great thing about migrating to Office 365 is it is cloud-based, can work on all of an employee’s devices, and the applications are constantly updated to the newest version.

However, transferring emails, calendars, and contact information needs to be handled carefully and correctly for the migration to be successful. If you’re tasked with helping your team migrate to Office 365, some hiccups can occur along the way and taking an Office 365 online training course can help expedite the process and minimize any headaches.

What is Office 365 migration?

Traditionally, when a company decides to make an Office 365 migration, they’re moving the company’s data and content securely from on-premise services to Microsoft’s online services. Now, companies can also choose to move their data from G Suite to Office 365.

G Suite is often chosen by start-up companies to host its work emails, contacts, and calendars, but Office 365 can be seen as a more comprehensive upgrade.

How do you plan an Office 365 migration?

The best way to plan an Office 365 migration is to create priorities and a time frame for the transition. It’s best to implement the migration in phases. This will make it easier to control, reduce errors, and help the team better prepare for the transition.

To successfully implement Office 365, the company’s employees need to buy-in to why the company is changing its service. Scheduling a kick-off meeting to ensure everyone within the organization is aware of the changes, why they are happening, and are excited about them is key. Offer this meeting two to three times, to allow busy workers a chance to make it fit their schedules.

Next, it’s time for the nitty-gritty. Check the company’s systems against Microsoft’s readiness checklist. Then, you’ll need to ensure the company’s data is clean enough to sync to Office 365. You’ll also want to check the connectivity and identify any roadblocks that might cause issues with the migration ahead of time. Then, it’s time to start aligning licenses, moving mailboxes, and diving into the migration.

How long does Office 365 migration take?

How long it will take the organization you’re working with to complete an Office 365 migration depends on how many mailboxes you are migrating. The timeline will also depend on how you layout the transition and phases for your company.

If you’re migrating less than 1,000 mailboxes, the migration will take between five and 14 days. Migrations of 1,000 to 5,000 mailboxes will take between 10 and 30 days. If you’re migrating more than 100,000 mailboxes it could take anywhere from 60 days to 180 days.

What are the common tools for Office 365 migration?

There are some common tools available to help ease your company’s transition to Office 365, such as Binary Tree, SkyKick, Transvault and more, to help companies migration.

Microsoft also offers comprehensive pre- and post-migration checklists to help ease the transition.

Why should I take an Office 365 migration training?

If you’ve been tasked with migrating your company’s, or a client’s, data and emails to Office 365, this is an exciting project but can be a complex one. By taking online Office 365 migration training through Cybrary, students will be able to grasp how to best prepare for the migration, be prepared to troubleshoot any issues and implement best-practices learned in their real-life migration. By taking an Office 365 migration course, students will be able to learn common migration issues ahead of time, and hopefully circumnavigate them during their own migration.

Taking the course online through Cybrary’s library means the classes can be taken at a student’s convenience and around a schedule that works for them. The modules are broken up into smaller portions, so students can power through them in a weekend, or spread them out over the course of a couple of weeks to learn how to best migrate their company to Office 365.
