What is the Rule of Thirds and why is it important?

The Rule of Thirds is the process of drawing two horizontal and two vertical lines on an image to divide the image into thirds. This imaginary grid creates nine boxes with four intersection points. If you place the important components of your image at or near these lines and intersections, the image becomes much more pleasing to the eye. When the subject is placed off-center, it creates movement in the image between the subject and the background.
