Syllabus
- Welcome
- Deflections and Statically Indeterminate Beam Structures
- In this section, we will learn how calculate the deflections, or deformations, of engineering structures subjected to loads. We will then use those techniques is solving statically indeterminate beam problems
- Column Buckling, Combined Loading, & Failure Theories
- In this section, we will learn how to analyze and design for column buckling. We will also learn how to analyze and design engineering structures subjected to combined loading. Finally, we will conclude with failure theories in mechanics of materials.

I am a retired engineer who worked as a structural/mechanical engineer for 40 years and was curious to see how subjects were currently being taught at a top school. I have taken the full series of Dr. Whiteman's courses. He is an excellent instructor with complete knowledge of the material and his presentation is very concise. His long experience in teaching these subjects is very evident in the way that he makes the material very easy to understand. He is an excellent choice for teaching these subjects.

I took all four of Dr. White courses of Mechanics of Materials in Coursera and have learned and master the skills necessary for engineering materials and structural analysis because of these courses. Prior to taking the courses I have little knowledge and experience for MM but now I am confident to be able to analyze structures with ease.

Dr. Whiteman is a very good teacher, he makes the complicated physics easy to understand and relate it with real life examples and equipment, which makes the class very interesting. I took all the four course in "Mechanics of Materials" and every and each of them is so great that I'd highly recommend them as a fundamental introduction course for those who are interested in mechanical engineering!

I highly reccomend all courses of Mr. Whiteman. He is an excellent teacher, with great experience in the subject. The courses are well structured with small but comprehensive modules. They helped me to recall basic principles from my university years and I really enjoyed the whole learning process.

I loved this course. Professor Whiteman is one of the best professors i've had a Georgia Tech. The flipped classroom setting is amazing in my opinion since more of the class time is spent applying the concepts we learn from the videos.

I am a retired former IT worker with a math major and a physics minor. Prof. Whiteman's course was did a very good job of explaining the engineering. He also was helpful in his comments in the forums when students had questions.

The course met my objective, which was to find a simplified approach to calculate buckling and deflection of a body under load.
