Overview

Learn and debate with criminal justice academics and professionals

What should the role of the police be? How do victims experience criminal justice? Are there alternative responses to crime instead of prosecution and conviction?

On this course, you’ll learn alongside specialists from the University of Sheffield’s Centre for Criminological Research and hear from those with firsthand experience of the criminal justice system, like the police, probation officers, former prisoners and criminal lawyers.

This is an introductory course and anyone can enjoy it without prior knowledge or experience of the subject. A basic knowledge of criminal justice will be helpful but is not essential. The course will focus on criminal justice in England and Wales but is designed so that learners from any country can participate.

The course will be useful for those considering an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the fields of criminology or criminal justice.

If you are thinking about studying criminology, you may be interested to know that our BA (Hons) in Criminology has recently been ranked number 2 in the Guardian University Guide 2019, making Sheffield the (second) best place to study this subject.

I found the course (and the comments by the participants) really interesting. I have no background in the criminal justice system and learnt a lot. I thought the structure of the course was very good and videos, written content and discussions useful. I am left with a feeling of sadness. I hugely value our UK criminal justice system, I want to live in a safe and just society. However it seems to me that there is insufficient support given through-out the system (and I would include education services here too) to help people choose not to commit crimes and if they do, after appropriate punishment, to build a crime free life.
Thanks to all the team who produced this course.

I thought the course was far reaching and certainly brought many different views. i suppose my thoughts were naive and certainly I have been astonished at how ignorant I am (was?) about the justice system.

I don't know if this course has been run before but I was exceptionally amazed at the differing backgrounds of those who were participating and making comments. The insight of those who had had custodial sentences and how they dealt with the aftermath was fascinating.

I really enjoyed this course. I found it both innovative and interesting, with each new day bringing something new to learn, to the table. I would highly recommend this course to anyone, even if they are not that interested by law. Well done to the educators for a well-put together and well structured course.
