This course is an advanced study of bodies in motion as applied to engineering systems and structures. We will study the dynamics of rigid bodies in 3D motion. This will consist of both the kinematics and kinetics of motion. Kinematics deals with the geometrical aspects of motion describing position, velocity, and acceleration, all as a function of time. Kinetics is the study of forces acting on these bodies and how it affects their motion.
---------------------------
Recommended Background:
To be successful in the course you will need to have mastered basic engineering mechanics concepts and to have successfully completed my course entitled Engineering Systems in Motion: Dynamics of Particles and Bodies in 2D Motion.” We will apply many of the engineering fundamentals learned in those classes and you will need those skills before attempting this course.
---------------------------
Suggested Readings:
While no specific textbook is required, this course is designed to be compatible with any standard engineering dynamics textbook. You will find a book like this useful as a reference and for completing additional practice problems to enhance your learning of the material.

Syllabus
- Course Introduction; Angular Velocity; Angular Acceleration
- In this section students will learn to derive the "derivative formula." We will define angular velocity for 3D motion and learn to determine and solve for the Angular Acceleration for a body.
- Velocities in Moving Reference Frames; Accelerations in Moving Reference Frames; The Earth as a Moving Frame
- In this section students will learn about velocities in moving reference frames, accelerations in moving reference frames, and the Earth as a moving frame.
- Eulerian Angles; Eulerian Angles Rotation Matrices; Angular Momentum in 3D; Inertial Properties of 3D Bodies
- In this section students will learn about Eulerian Angles rotation matrices, angular momentum in 3D, and intertial properties of 3D bodies.
- Translational and Rotational Transformations of Inertial Properties; Principal Axes and Principal Moments of Inertia
- In this section students will learn about translational and rotational transformations of inertial properties, and principal axes and principal moments of inertia.
- Motion Equations Governing 3D Rotational Motion of a Rigid Body (Euler Equations)
- In this section students will learn to develop Euler Equations for 3d motion and solve for the motion of a rigid body undergoing 3D rotational motion.
- 3D Impulse-Momentum Principles; 3D Work-Energy Principles
- In this section students will learn to develop and apply the principle of impulse-momentum and about 3D work-energy principles.

Thank you for the great series of courses, Dr. Whiteman. The explanations are clear, the topics are well structured, and the videos are dense and contain only relevant information.
I recommend all four courses to everyone who is interested in mechanics, wants to understand how things work and make them work better. And remember, engineers make the World)) -
To my knowledge, there is no other course that covers three-dimensional rigid body dynamics at the introductory level as thoroughly as Wayne Whiteman's Georgia tech MOOC.
Even a traditional lecture hall format would have difficulty matching this course.
Main topics:
1.) Differentiation in moving frames of reference.
2.) The angular velocity and angular acceleration vector computation.
3.) Velocity and acceleration as observed from moving frame of reference.
4.) Three-dimensional rigid-body dynamics.
It requires a bit of time and effort but the return is well worth the investment.

This course was one of the most influential courses on my career as an engineer. Dr. Wayne Whiteman did an absolutely amazing job of diving into the details of each topic, providing specific examples for each problem, and being a fun and enthusiastic teacher. After taking this course I knew that dynamics was one of the fields that I wanted to pursue in my career. From here I have gone on to be a professional structural and dynamics engineer. I couldn't have done it without this class. Even today I still look back on this material when i need to brush up on certain subjects.
Thank You! -
Watched all these videos for my dynamics class at Georgia Tech in Atlanta Georgia. Ended up making a strong A in the class, and it ended up being one of my favorite classes in Mechanical Engineering. Thank you Dr. Wayne Whiteman for making this course available to everyone for free! Highly recommend.

This made 3D dynamics easy to understand as it broke down the more complicated topics into easier steps to follow. The videos also have practice problems that the professor goes over with you in an interactive manner, which really allows for an understanding of the topic and helps it stick.

The course is very well structured. It gives all the basics, and equip you to attempt complex problems. Apart from the math and laws, Mr. Wayne Whiteman like in all his other courses strives to give you an intuition of mechanics which is essential for a designer. I highly recommend this course.
-
He explains everything extremely well, and the class videos are always available so you can actually review the material at any time. He cares about his students and grades fairly. If you stay up to date on video lectures, the class should be manageable.
-
One of the best Mechanical Engineering courses I have ever taken. Dr. Whiteman does an excellent job explaining the material starting from first principals all the way to application so that it is easy to follow along and understand.
-
I feel this course helped me to learn about dynamics in a low pressure environment because I was not given a college grade for this class. Dynamics is one of the more difficult engineering courses, so it helps not to be under pressure.
-
This was my first proper course on kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies outside self study. It helped me consolidate my understanding of the subject and (I feel) perform better at college when I actually took the classroom course.
-
Really good lectures. Loved taking it. It was a good complement to my graduation, since I did not got it so well the first time. My only complaint is that the question on the forum are never (or it take to much time) answered.
-
This specialization has allowed me to look at the world through the eyes of an engineer, and I believe that taking these classes will be a huge advantage in my first year at Colorado School of Mines. Well done Dr. Whiteman!
-
The course is clear and information rich. I developed a good understanding of concepts through this course. Also other courses in this series are pretty useful for people who are looking to get strong foundation
-
This is very nice course on 3D dynamics. All concepts explained very well, the difficulty of mathematics is appropriate. Highly recommended to student or engineer that needs to review dynamics for their job.
-
Fantastic Course. Dr. Whiteman is excellent at explaining the material and the exercises included with the videos really help to reinforce the material concepts. The class is a life saver
-
Dr. Whiteman is a great teacher. The course is set up for you to really learn, and he is always readily available to help outside of the “virtual classroom.”
Highly recommended! -
A very useful course for any aspiring engineer. Dynamics is a tough subject, but Dr. Whiteman's lectures break the content down into manageable and easy to learn chunks.
-
Very good teacher, explains really well, clear and concise, I specially enjoyed his demonstrations with the wheel and the book throwing. A course worth tanking.
-
i want to learn all HVAC systems and have certificate. I am working now in one company but I want learn a more. Can you learn it to me? Thanks all. Please sall back.

Very clear explanations. The topics are covered in a coherent and pedagogical way. Very useful to expand understanding of mechanics. Thanks Dr. Whiteman.
