Save Big on Coursera Plus. 7,000+ courses at $160 off. Limited Time Only!
Explore fractal and multifractal scaling exponents in geophysical data through this comprehensive 32-minute tutorial from AGU. Delve into the statistical property of scale invariance and power-law descriptions. Learn methods for analyzing self-similar and self-affine fractals, including ruler, box-counting, mass, power-spectral density, and size versus number techniques. Address roll-off data at upper and lower ends of fractal behavior. Examine multifractal analysis methods with atmospheric and climate data examples, covering fluctuation analysis, spike plots, trace moment analysis, and scaling in probability space. Gain insights into common pitfalls of spectral analysis, including spurious oscillations. Benefit from demonstrations of software for analyzing power-scaling in time series and 2D/3D data. Presented by Christopher Barton from Wright State University and Shaun Lovejoy from McGill University, this tutorial covers essential topics from fractal geometry and types to practical applications and interpretation of spectra.
