Study of Ethnic and Folk Costumes

Overview

Relying on Yunnan’s unique multi-ethnic cultural resources, the course integrates the theoretical methods of art, aesthetics, ethnology, anthropology, sociology, history and other disciplines to construct a research paradigm of dress culture that seeks to know from the truth. It precisely applies field research methods, investigates and collects ethnic costumes and their cultures, and accurately and systematically explains their value system and structural framework so as to provide a reliable data base, ideological basis and methodology for the protection and inheritance as well as the innovative development of Chinese ethnic costume culture.

The programme explores new ideas and ways of combining the study of ethnic folk costumes with teaching practice and heritage research through the study of ethnic culture, the transmission of costume skills, and the study of costume design, cultivates students' practical research ability and practical skills, thus establishing traditional aesthetic concepts and consolidating basic professional knowledge; and considers the feasibility of the integration of the status quo of the ethnic folk costume art and the discipline of fashion design.
