Overview

Maritime English Listening and Speaking is an introductory course aiming at building practical, relevant language skills for undergraduates in maritime universities, seafarers and other professionals in maritime industry. The course is co-designed by teachers at the School of Foreign Languages and Navigation College at Dalian Maritime University (DMU). Module subjects cover such key topics as introduction to ships, work of seafarers, ship orders, pilotage, anchoring and mooring, loading and unloading, navigation, communication at sea, emergency at sea, anti-piracy, and PSC inspection. This course provides learners a range of videos to watch, which are filmed on the motor vessel YUKUN (the training ship of DMU) and MUNKEBO Maersk (one of the largest container ships in the world), materials to read, topics to research, discussions to participate in. Diploma students are also required to complete the module assignments and final examination.

 

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

l  develop standard maritime English vocabulary;

l  understand seafarers’ life and work at sea;

l  get familiar with operational procedures on a ship;

l  communicate confidently with other maritime professionals.
