Overview

Prerequisite: ENGL 001A. English 001B introduces students to literary analysis with an emphasis on critical thinking, close reading, and analytical writing skills. Engaging discussions on representative works from major genres, this course promotes appreciation and critical understanding of the cultural, historical, and aesthetic qualities of literature. Students have an opportunity to read, discuss, and compose analytic essays about literary texts (such as short fiction, poetry, drama, and novels) from diverse cultures. Instructors offer information about formal and informal fallacies of language and thought, and the principles of inductive and deductive reasoning. The course develops proficiency in research skills, literary criticism, and the composition of essays totaling 6000 words that synthesize multiple sources.
