Dynamics and Control

Universitat Politècnica de València via UPV [X]

This course may be unavailable.

Overview

This is an interactive course about the basic concepts of Systems, Control and their impact in all the human activities. First, the basic concepts of systems, dynamics, structure and control are introduced. Looking at many examples in Nature and human made devices, we realize that the dynamic behavior of most systems can be modified by adding a control system. How to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a system and measure its performance will provide the tools to design new controlled systems fulfilling some requirements. By considering which are the benefits of the control and the challenges for the future will open the mind to tackle new applications and develop new scenarios from the micro-systems level to the common systems and the whole universe. An overview of the techniques available for a deeper introduction to the subject will be presented at the end.

What do I need to know?

In this course, maths are avoided as much as possible and most of the concepts are explained by words, but the generic concepts of operators and relationships between variables are used through the course. A basic and general knowledge of physics will help to understand some phenomena but it is not mandatory. The teacher is co-author of an introductory book on the subject, Feedback and control for everyone published by Springer in 2010.

What will I learn ?

Control technology is said to be a hidden technology. We do not notice it under normal operation, but it appears if a failure happens. Looking around in Nature and at human made devices, we realize that their behavior presents analogies and that we can manipulate their temporal evolution. Characterizing the dynamic behavior of systems and the possibility to change it by introducing control devices is the main aim of the course. You will learn to analyze the dynamic properties of a system and the options to change its behavior according to some requirements. You will learn the basic concepts to undertake further studies in control engineering and its use in a variety of disciplines, from human and social sciences to any engineering field.

excelente curso, es de muchisima ayuda para nosotros como estudiantes ya que con estos cursos podemos reforzar o completar ciertos temas relacionados a nuestra carrera de estudios, en este caso a mi proceso de ser Ingeniero electricista

Great teaching and learning lot of knowledge sir , dynamics and control iam learning subject and useful the subject in our electrical and electronics engineering
Thank you for the edx platform.

Very useful to every student and i understood lot of things and i have got some lack of knowledge from the professor.

I have been studying control systems but I never understood the jargon and the main ideas behind it, all I knew is that control is for stability, but have never related between transient logic and math, or never knew the classification of control systems in such clear and overall presence like this.

I am so glad I finished this course and I wish I can afford the fifty dollar to upgrade it. On any way the professor knows exactly his subject and his students.
    Thanks,,

I could see how this course could be useful, but it's important to not that THIS IS NOT A TECHNICAL COURSE. The course lays out a conceptual framework for understanding systems and control, but very important mathematical aspects (Laplace transform, Z transform), are not explained in detail and not a major part of the course. If you want an introduction to the concepts surrounding systems control, this is the course for you. If you want details on the methods of control engineering, it is not.

Good introductory course, well-structured and introduced in a very simple way. But I think some sections need more clarification, for example if an interactive sections is added to let the student discover the effect of the PID controller parameters by manipulating them, and to build blocks for simple systems like in Simulink.

A very fine course. This is a basic introduction to Dynamics and Control Theory suitable for engineering undergraduates but accessible to non-engineers. If you know next to nothing about the field but are interested in learning the basics, this is the course for you. Professor Pedro Albertos does a wonderful job of presenting the material. I wish he would do a follow-up course on deriving the mathematics for control systems design.

This is an introductory, basic course on control and is very well structured. The teacher works very well with each content, going through several concepts. However, I believe that it would be better used with some practical examples in each topic, such as the assembly of the system in Matlab, including the implementation of the control.

I also believe that the course time could be a little longer, with the inclusion of solved problems.

Overall, considering that this is an introduction, the course is very good.

It is a helpful course for anybody that wants to have a better idea of control systems and gives you a foundation to base your future learning. It is attempting to give you the basic knowledge and my personal opinion is that it is very successful.

A poor, unworthy, useless course. The content is bad, the teacher is bad, the methodology is bad, the questions are more than bad. Definitely not recommended.

This course is very useful. The content delivery is application oriented. The mathematical model concept was explained clearly. The future trend applications was vey useful.

This course provided a solid basic understanding into the vast field of dynamics and controls.
Thanks for the wonderful content, explanations and the clarity on the basics.

I am very impressed with the course and the teaching format. I will be glad if another course can be made on control systems with Matlab and Simulink implementations. Thank you.

It is not a technical course. You won't see many equations but instead lots of lots of examples without actual numbers and equations. I basically fast forwarded the videos.
The equations given are not very well explained. The variables/parameters are not presented on the schematics.
Some questions in the midterm is covered after the midterm.
Questions are not designed to teach or measure knowledge. But rather "trick" questions that you need to be careful with wording. (e.g. lots of "is NOT" type questions, and "reject disturbances" is wrong because it can only reduce the effect of disturbances etc.)

The course was a good exercise in higher abstract level control theory or logic, rather than design by calculations or implementation. I hope the course adds at least twice more questions/exercises/content on every individual control system (open/closed/cascade/...) so that the student is taught about the functionality/causality of signals. Perhaps using more real world systems including their responses and see what happens when you adjust every possible parameter.

I appreciate the effort of Prof. Pedro Albertos in the course, most of the topics are well explained. However, I believe that a better course can be offered including practical assignments by means of software such as Matlab/Simulink. In fact, in my opinion without this kind of approach only a shallow understanding of control can be obtained by the participants. I strongly suggest to make the course more practical including an assignment for each module.

I was aware it's an introductory course but in my opinion it lacked any mathematical or hands-on practice and instead focus a lot on the concept of control, its terminology and so on. Not bad if you have never heard of control systems, but not very useful if you're trying to implement any basic system.

Primero los felicito por el curso, segundo recomiendo más ejercicios de cálculo y simulación con MatLab para trabajar y aprender de mejor manera el control en los diferentes sistemas.

Very good Course. If You want to learn Control, this Course should be very useful towards this Goal.
The Course goes into the Basics, which is the core of it.
