Technical Report Writing for Engineers

Overview

Learn to communicate effectively through technical report writing

Technical reports are a vital tool for engineers to communicate their ideas. This online course introduces technical report writing and teaches the techniques you need to construct well-written engineering reports.

Each week, we’ll look at a key section of a technical report and the skills needed to write it. You’ll cover areas such as referencing and citations; presenting equations; diagrams and data; and using language and tenses correctly.

We’ll also talk to practising engineers, as well as students and educators who write and mark technical reports, who’ll give their hands-on advice.

This course is designed for both student and professional engineers. It will teach you the technical report writing skills you need to tackle everything from a two-page document to a PhD thesis. As such, it will be applicable for the entirety of your engineering degree or career.

I have successfully finished this course and wow what a journey it has been. At first I was a bit hesitant that this course might be very technical, however, it was the entire opposite. It taught me the basics mandatory for a good technical report, starting with the significance of a 'good' technical report.
I think the beginning week was the crucial one since it highlighted the aftermath of poor communication via bad technical report. The lessons, quizzes are really easily understandable which makes it even more interesting.
Moreover, the videos of professional Engineers and industrialists motivated me to a great extent on learning all the things necessary for a good report. Like they say, experience speaks for itself.

This was a very interesting and informative course. I often have to compile reports on many different subjects and at times the reports are skimmed over because of moving onto the next subject. A comment by one of the tutors wished this had been taught in schools prior to engaging in university studies? that would have been a subject worth taking in school and like the tutor, forced religious studies was certainly not my strong point and had absolutely no bearing in trying to tackle Young's Modulus.... In an age where there is a lack of home grown Engineers and Construction Professionals in the UK.. this needs to be added to some schools curriculum.

Excellent and concise course. Obivously has limitations with a lack of tutor feedback due to it's online nature, but as a set of videos/quizzes/webpages it's about as good as it can get.

A big thank you to the course team of "Technical Report Writing for Engineers". Course was very well organized and materials provided were high quality, with very pertinent, well thought through and well organized content.

The only aspect I feel could be improved would be getting comments/feedback from course faculty in respect to our responses (unless I missed something), which will provide students (specially the younger/ less experienced ones) with an additional, more personalized and interactive learning opportunity.

This is my first course about writing a technical report for engineers. So, I have taken every bit of information I found in the course and hope to use it for the near future. It was great, outstanding and exceptional course which opened my eyes to what a good technical report is and why does it matter. Let me simplify it for you. At the end of this course you will be able to produce a good report and you will have a checklist to make sure what you have produced is perfect. You will also gain other important knowledge throughout the course such as referencing, access to a database from The University of Sheffield to search a background for your topic and much more.

The course is extremely user-friendly with regards to the short videos made of professionals sharing their experience and the graphical animations used. Also, the quizzes and activities introduced along the course ease the digestion of information given previously. I would like to thank Doctor Andrew Garrard and his colleagues for the efforts put in making such an effective course. I was attracted to it from the first chapter and was sad to have completed the course. I have learned a lot of valuable information and will definitely take it and apply it in writing my reports in the future.

    Thank You!

I found the course very enlightening. A very easy-to-follow course with what to do and most importantly, what not to do. Emphasis was placed on being concise in language and especially factual in content even when making a conjecture. I also found the videos by the engineers in the industry very useful. The comment section was like staying in for optional tuition from peers and teaching assistants, as such, created a milieu to share and compare. This is my first online course and it has been a great defining experience.
