ABOUT THE COURSE: The basic objective of this course is to apprise the learners with basics of Automation and Networking in Libraries. The course will help to acquaint with the procedures of planning and implementation of automation software in various types such as open source, commercial and in-house developed in libraries. Also it will help the learners to make them familiar with all the areas of library automation in an effective way. It also creates awareness on the different types of integrated library management systems used for library automation at national and international levels. Learners will also have a comprehensive idea about the tools, strategies and techniques of Retrospective Conversion, which one of the major components of Library Automation process where the process of converting the existing manual catalogues of a library into a machine-readable format adopting specified standards is being performed. Learners will also have a clear understanding about the library networking and library consortia and these aspects have a great potential and new capabilities for sharing information amongst different libraries. It will also give an overview of Internet technologies and digital resources, searching techniques, digital libraries, and institutional libraries.
