German 3 will build upon the courses German 1 and German 2, which are already being offered on the NPTEL platform since two years.The overall objective of this course is to acquire good knowledge of the German language, corresponding to the B1 proficiency level of the European Common Framework of Reference for Languages.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_LanguagesB1 is the proficiency level required to be eligible to study in Germany, Austria and at several important universities in Switzerland, and to be able to work in these countries. Through this course we hope to bring your German language competence to a level where you would be able to qualify B1 level exams conducted by certifying institutions, and thus acquire the language eligibility to study / work in Germany (as required as of today by most institutions and organizations).INTENDED-AUDIENCE:Learners with basic knowledge of German wanting to acquire the competence to be able to study or work in German speaking countriesPRE-REQUISITES: Successful completion of German 2 OR equivalent knowledge of German languageINDUSTRY-SUPPORT: Companies / Organisations / Individuals having business / work with Germany, Austria and/or Switzerland

Syllabus

Week 1:Travel – related vocabulary, narrating experiences; Grammar: clauses with infinitive constructions, use of the verb lassen Week 2:Tech and gadgets – related vocabulary, understanding information about gadgets and technology; Grammar: clauses with obwohl, Genitive case, genitive prepositions wegen and trotz Week 3:Milestones – Historical and Personal – related vocabulary, understanding and narrating about the past; Grammar: Past Tense, temporal prepositions, expressing consequences: deshalb, deswegen, so…dass etc. Week 4:All about Work – related vocabulary, job search, advertisements etc.; Grammar: Subjunctive mood, Verb-Preposition combinations, Clauses Week 5:Environment – related vocabulary, Environment protection; Grammar: Clauses with da, Comparative and Superlative as adjectives, n-Deklination etc. Week 6:Looking ahead – talking about future plans, reading longer texts; Grammar: Future Tense (I), Relative Clauses in Dative case and with Prepositions
Week 7:Relationships – related vocabulary – men / women / family / conflicts; Grammar: Past Perfect, temporal clauses and their sequence
Week 8:
Body and Health – related vocabulary – Health, Hospitals, Schools etc, offering help, talking about habits and memories; Grammar: Reflexive pronouns (continuation), Negation, 2-part Connectors
Week 9:
Art and Culture – related vocabulary – Art / Theatre / Films / Museums, adding emphasis to sentences, talking about art, films etc.; Grammar: Adjektivdeklination (continuation), placing nicht in a sentence
Week 10:
Community / Living Together – related vocabulary – Social Values, Europe, Politics, understanding information about the EU, making a short presentation; Grammar: Passive Voice, Prepositions with the Genitive case innerhalb, außerhalb
Week 11:
Community / Living Together – related vocabulary – Social Values, Europe, Politics, understanding information about the EU, making a short presentation; Grammar: Passive Voice, Prepositions with the Genitive case innerhalb, außerhalb
Week 12:
All about Money – related vocabulary – Banks and Money in a Globalized World, Conversations in a Bank, understanding instructions; Grammar: je…desto constructions, Participles as Adjectives
