ABOUT THE COURSE:This course aims to discuss the role of gender in the context of theatre and performance in India. It focuses on the concept of body and gender in performances and explores various literary trends and experiments that have affected and evolved theatre in India. The course refers to Natyashastra and Sanskrit dramaturgy and traces the history of theatre in India in the first week and gradually moves towards the various theoretical strands to understand different classical and folk forms of performances. Along with this, the course marks the expanding socio-cultural conception of gender and the continuously changing and developing modern theatre in India.
