Overview

The course covers all key communication forms: verbal, non-verbal, written, and business, ensuring a strong foundation in both formal and informal communication.Participants will expand their vocabulary with exercises on synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrasal verbs for practical use.Key grammar concepts, including subject-verb agreement, tenses, and common errors, will improve both writing and speaking accuracy.Active listening techniques and strategies for various contexts, such as lectures and interviews, are taught to enhance comprehension.Students will develop speaking skills through self-introduction, role plays, group discussions, and preparing for interviews and presentations.

WEEK 1: Communication Skills - An Introduction

Definition and Process of Communication. Types of communication: Formal and Informal, Verbal, Non-verbal, Written, Technical and Business Communication, Barriers to Successful Communication, the 7Cs of Effective Communication.


WEEK 2: Elevating Your Vocabulary

Active and Passive Vocabulary, Etymology, Single-word substitution, Synonyms, Antonyms, Prefixes and Suffixes, Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs.


WEEK 3: Refining Grammar Skills

Parts of speech, Subject-Verb agreement, Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Pronouns, Modal Verbs, Wh- Questions, Yes/No Questions, Common errors.


WEEK 4: Listening Skills

Active Listening, Hearing vs Listening, Listening to Short Lecture, Recipe, Telephone conversation, Interview, Self-Introduction, Description of Objects.


WEEK 5: Speaking Skills

Self-Introduction, Talking about the Past, Just a Minute, Picture Description, Role Plays, Interview Skills, Oral Presentation, Group Discussion.


WEEK 6: Reading Skills

Reading Strategies, Skimming and Scanning, Reading Poetry, Extracts from Fiction, Reading Comprehension Techniques, Pre-While-Post Reading Techniques, Inference and Summarising


WEEK 7: Writing Skills

Writing Letters, Paragraphs, Reports, Essays, E-mails, Notices, Minutes of a Meeting, Job Application, CV/Resume writing, Correspondence, Business and Official, Notices (including Press Release).


WEEK 8: Soft Skills for Professional Excellence

Soft Skills and Hard Skills. Importance of Soft Skills and Etiquette, Life skills, Adaptability, Empathy, Problem Solving, Decision-Making Skills, Critical Thinking and Creativity, Leadership and Teamwork, Time Management.
