Improve the support you provide to students’ learning in secondary school

Engaging young people in the classroom can be a challenge for teachers and teaching assistants. Secondary school students often learn differently to younger students. This can require a different teaching approach.

On this course, you will learn how to support effective learning experiences in secondary schools, exploring the different ways secondary school students learn. You will also reflect on your own values and biases to improve your confidence and working practice.

By the end of the course you should feel more confident in your ability to support secondary school students.

This course is ideal for teaching assistants in secondary schools. It will also be of interest to teachers returning to work, newly qualified teachers, unqualified staff, as well as providing a refresher for current teachers. Parents of children in schools may also find this course useful in helping them to support and encourage their children’s learning.

This course focusses on teaching in secondary schools. If you work in a primary school, you may like to join Supporting Successful Learning in Primary Schools.

An interesting and thought provoking course with lots of interaction , good ideas and resources. A lot to take in but much can be saved or you have time to go back to parts you have not understood or need to re-read. There is a lot of material to feedback to work colleagues which is great. Much to contemplate in my own working practice as a PSA in secondary school in Scotland leading to improved working practices I'm sure.

I would like to thank the management for giving out this course for free. I have really learnt from it. I have learnt to always listen and that Listen means Listen, always allow students to be expressive. Learnt that if you want interesting answers, you've got to ask interesting questions. As a teacher if you want more reflective answers, you may have to wait longer because all students do not assimilate at same speed.

I could go on and on but am truly grateful, I could learn all of these to improve my teaching career at no cost at all. Thank you, its truly appreciated.

Many interesting points thought through during this course, helpful scales eg Hayden, Matrix questioning. Feel that the whole school should use some of these practices for them to become effective however every little helps !

This course was really interesting, it covered a lot of important information regarding working with children at school, as well as reminders and lessons for general life. I think this is a really good course for everyone to take, but it should be a requirement for anyone working with children, there was so much good advice and many great ideas.

This was very helpful and insightful
Something like this should be reiterated at the end of each term to teachers I think as it can be forgotten or lost to admin work.
