Universitat Politècnica de València via edX

Overview

¡Bienvenidos y bienvenidas! (Welcome!) In this Spanish course, you will learn basic vocabulary to talk about yourself and your everyday life, in the present and in the past, in simple and brief communication situations, as well as about plans for an immediate future. At the end of the course you will be able to communicate in everyday situations according to the A1 proficiency level as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL, Council of Europe).

The course, which is designed for English speakers, offers a variety of exercises after going through the stages of content presentation, comprehension and production. You have videos, small texts and audios to improve your pronunciation, glossaries, activities for oral practice with other course students, quizzes, grammar cards and recommendations on external Internet resources to continue learning more and more Spanish.

The topics on which the activities revolve are work life, family life, city life and outdoor life. As you can see, a bit of everything to be able talk about yourself and to engage in everyday communication.

How do you learn a new language? I'm not sure anybody knows the answer to that question. Doing an online course has got to be easier than trying to pick it up simply by studying a book. These courses are a good start. I know more Spanish now than I…

Altogether a good introductory course to the study of Spanish, providing ample tools and exercises for beginning students. Some glitchy spots here and there with the technical aspects, but support is available. The big hurdle, of course, is the lack of structured conversational opportunities. I was able to gain familiarity with basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary, which gives the student a good start. But figuring a way to include speaking drills and conversation, together with helpful feedback, is still needed.

I really enjoyed Basic Spanish 1 and I found the self-paced approach very useful. The videos are relaxed and just right in terms of content and length- easy to re-play if needed. The presenters are friendly and clear. I jumped at the chance to complete Basic Spanish 2 and I am enjoying it very much.
    Many thanks!

I too hope that Spanish 3 (and Spanish 4!) will be available soon. This format would be great for other languages... once I complete the Spanish.

I was most impressed by the original course, but this additional course did not really provide much new, and in my opinion was a semi-review of the original course. I had hoped for more new information, in fact I had hoped and assumed that it would be "One step further", but was rather disappointed. I do hope, however, that the University will do a more advanced course for English speakers in the future.

I've been taking Spanish classes using several different platforms. By far this is THE BEST. Being a foreign language instructor myself, I can clearly see that. A lot of work!... And they keep improving it.
Also I am planning on moving to Spain, so It's great I have this possibility to learn the Castilian Spanish rather than Latin American version which prevails in the Western Hemisphere where I am located right now.

I am using Basic Spanish 2 as a review and reinforcment in my on going desire to master Spanish. Most on-line courses feature Spanish as used in Latin America. This course uses European Spanish with the vosotros/as forms - just what I want and need.
It is fresh, modern, has really useful content, and an easy to follow format. Each lesson uses and reinforces what has been studied previously thereby giving the student a step by step sense of accomplishment.

I haven`t completed the course yet, but according to what I`ve seen and studied, it is really nice work. it gives useful expressions for you to start speaking as soon as possible. Grammar is explained in a very easy, understandable way. The possibility to listen to the grammar explanation in Spanish gives you an opportunity to develop your listening skills as well.

Very well organized program providing a mixture of media visual and auditory, as well as a mix of methods all of which facilitated my learning and helped maintain my interest.
The course does need to develop a more even pathway as elements of the program were sometimes far too easy or depending on your view other elements were much more difficult.

I audited both Basic Spanish 1 and 2 and I was completely satisfied with them for the approach to the language , the way with which grammar and vocabulary are introduced, the exercises and the immediate possibility to check our comprehension. I hope you will go on with furthe steps of Spanish and let us improve our knowledge of the language.

I took the Basic Spanish 1 and learned a lot and really enjoyed it, so I was very happy when they created Basic Spanish 2. (By the way, I was one of many who asked for Spanish 2.)

This class was even better than the first. I'm hoping this wonderful group of teachers creates a Spanish 3!!!

Since this course has been divided into two parts, it has greatly improved. The lessons are easy to follow and very helpful. They are just difficult enough to keep it challenging, while not being so difficult as to discourage learning. It’s a really good way to invest your time.

I completed Part 1 of Basic Spanish which was a lot of fun. Part 2 was definitely a step up. It is an excellent course, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The self-paced learning style suited me. I loved the puzzles/games as a way of learning. I eagerly await Part 3.
  • This class it great for beginners. Intermediate or advanced learners may find many of the concepts previously covered but the simple language used to explain concepts may also give new clarity to difficult topics. This is an awesome foundation course.
