He describes the phenomenon of integrin-mediated activation of latent TGFß, the roles of integrins and TGFß in multiple aspects of in vivo biology, and how dysfunctional epithelial cells and fibroblasts collaborate to drive pulmonary fibrosis. Dr. Sheppard’s work informs the research that supports pharmaceutical treatments that may help repair fibrotic lung tissue.

Dean Sheppard, MD is the Principal Investigator of the UCSF multidisciplinary training grant in lung disease for the past ten years, Division Chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Allergy Division for the past eleven years and Lung Biology Center Director since 1986.

Participants will be able to explain how dysfunctional epithelial cells and fibroblasts collaborate to drive pulmonary fibrosis and the role that members of the integrin family play in activating transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways to drive tissue fibrosis.
