Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, Medicine Grand Rounds - Opioids and Pain Management: Preventing Harm and Maximizing Benefit, 11/13/2020 8:00:00 AM - 11/13/2023 9:00:00 AM, Dr. Alford discusses the important differences between chronic and acute pain, and why treating chronic pain is complex for the patient and provider. Using “universal precautions” including careful assessment of patient and medication risk factors, and developing a trusting relationship can increase success with treatment of pain, or facilitate a safe taper or discontinuation of opioids when indicated. He reminds providers that they are there to judge the medication, not the patient, and recommends appropriate use of CDC guidelines for improved outcomes in this difficult field.

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH is the Director of the BUSM Safer/Competent Opioid Prescribing Education (SCOPE of Pain) program which trains thousands of healthcare providers nationally. He has been recognized as a “Champion of Change” by the White House, and has received multiple academic awards. His clinical, educational and research interests focus on SBIRT, managing opioid use disorders and safer and more competent opioid prescribing for managing pain.
Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to summarize the benefits and risks of long-term opioids for the treatment of chronic pain and apply “Universal Precautions” when prescribing and monitoring opioid therapy for chronic pain.
