Using “universal precautions” including careful assessment of patient and medication risk factors, and developing a trusting relationship can increase success with treatment of pain, or facilitate a safe taper or discontinuation of opioids when indicated. He reminds providers that they are there to judge the medication, not the patient, and recommends appropriate use of CDC guidelines for improved outcomes in this difficult field.
