Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, Medicine Grand Rounds - Frail Older Adults and How to Find Them, 8/14/2020 8:00:00 AM - 8/14/2023 9:00:00 AM, Dr. Johnson discusses the concept of frailty, which is predominantly a condition of older adults. However, he suggests that it should be based on predictors of poor health outcomes such as weakness, poor endurance, low activity and weight loss. A combination of risk factors, including gait assessment, can help providers identify which of their patients are truly frail and should be counseled about functional abilities and safety.

Dr. Johnson received his medical degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and completed training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. In 1997, he joined the medical school faculty at Emory and at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. He is currently the Paul Seavey Chair and Division Chief of the Emory Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics, and Chair of the Emory Family and Preventive Medicine Department.

Participants will be able to critique the empirical evidence supporting the concept of frailty, apply theories of frailty in clinical care, and discuss a best management plan with and for patients who are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality because of frailty.
