Matthews Visiting Professorship, 11/6/2020 8:00:00 AM - 11/6/2023 9:00:00 AM, Dr. Pinto-Powell discusses the nuances between cognitive and emotive empathy, and then refines the conversation to examine moral and behavioral empathy. As a medical educator, she sees medical students™ empathy levels fluctuate over the course of their education which she correlates with the moral distress they experience in the classroom and in clinical training. In an effort to cultivate empathy and address the arc of well-being in medicine, she advocates for better communication, experiential learning, student groups and the study of restorative justice.
