Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, Medicine Grand Rounds - Cultivating Empathy in Medicine: What Would Dr. Matthews Say? The Louis B. Matthews Visiting Professorship, 11/6/2020 8:00:00 AM - 11/6/2023 9:00:00 AM, Dr. Pinto-Powell discusses the nuances between cognitive and emotive empathy, and then refines the conversation to examine moral and behavioral empathy. As a medical educator, she sees medical students™ empathy levels fluctuate over the course of their education which she correlates with the moral distress they experience in the classroom and in clinical training. In an effort to cultivate empathy and address the arc of well-being in medicine, she advocates for better communication, experiential learning, student groups and the study of restorative justice.

About our Presenter
Dr. Roshini Pinto-Powell is an active clinician whose academic career has focused on medical education, mentorship, and leadership in both the Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education curricula, and is the Associate Dean for Admissions at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She currently co-directs the On Doctoring preclinical course at Geisel and has attended on both the inpatient wards and outpatient clinics. Her scholarly interests are in the areas of clinical reasoning, professionalism and patient bias.
Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to review data on medical student well-being pre/post matriculation, cite factors that lead to burnout in our learners and reflect on our efforts to reorient medical education toward empathy.
