Malaysia’s official language is the Malay language, also known as Bahasa Melayu. Globally, over 290 million people speak Malay either natively or as a second language, putting it within the top ten most spoken languages in the world.

On this three-week course from Universiti Malaya, you’ll learn the fundamentals of the Malay language in an easy-to-understand and effective way. You’ll cover a range of basic topics from introducing yourself and discussing weather to numbers, and much more.

Discover the sound system in the Bahasa language

You’ll be introduced to the different sounds across Malay, including vowels, consonants, clusters, and diphthong. You’ll then practice different words and syllables using the combinations of sounds that you’ve learnt.

Explore how to introduce yourself and describe your surroundings

Once you have a grasp on the core building blocks of Malay, you’ll start learning numbers, including currency, percentages, and dates and times.

You’ll then move on to how to greet in Malay, both in general setting and on special occasions, followed by how to introduce yourself and the terms used in introducing your family.
