Genesis is a book of fundamental importance for the Jewish and Christian faiths and has exerted a profound influence on Western Civilization. In addition to being a great religious text, it is also a literary masterpiece. This course explores some of the work’s major narrative themes, including the complex relationship between God and man, the consequences of a rupture in that relationship, and the path towards reconciliation.

Immediately I was suspicious of this class and the materials being taught because of a tremendous bias and leading the student to see the Bible as poetry or fictional and presented so many questions, I chose to back out of this and find something more agreeable with me academically. Very disappointed in this.

Beautiful & informative presentation. So intriguing to have this offered to the public. I loved going through the entire narrative & taking the quiz, at the end of each. Great opportunity to enjoy.

In this course, Professor Jackson shows the literary genius of the writers of the Book of Genesis. He does not focus on the religious meaning of the text. By understanding the literary techniques used by the authors, we can glean a deeper understanding of the message they were trying to convey and enter into the texts more deeply. I see this course as a good introduction to the major themes and characters of the Book of Genesis.
