This degree aims to prepare you to effectively manage projects and the budgets surrounding the development of the built environment. Covering physical, legal, economic and technological factors, you’ll have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the theory and practice of procurement, construction economics, cost management and best practice project management within the construction industry.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop high-level knowledge in the theoretical and practical aspects of strategic management in the construction industry.

Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Builders, this degree explores the constraints of project and cost management and helps you develop the core skills required by construction project managers, cost managers and quantity surveyors.

Syllabus

A student who successfully completes the MSc Construction Project and Cost Management degree will have achieved the following course learning outcomes.

  • Demonstrated an advanced understanding and knowledge of the key concepts, theories and principles used in quantity surveying and construction project management

  • Shown a critical appreciation of the significant factors constraining the effective management and development of the built environment (e.g. physical, legal, economic and technological factors) and health and safety precautions and their associated cost implications on construction projects

  • Critically evaluated and applied modern financial evaluation techniques to development projects in the built environment with underlying analysis being informed by the wider business and capital markets areas; and illustrated advanced research and analytical capabilities to inform decision making at an advanced level

  • Appraised theoretical and practical aspects of strategic management, leadership and consultancy in business organisations

  • Evaluated and developed objective strategies to examine commercial and business scenarios in the form of case studies and projects related to construction project and cost management profession

  • Demonstrated an understanding of the multi-disciplinary nature of the construction process, the roles and responsibilities of the construction professionals and stakeholders, and a respect for the fellow team members in terms of both diversity and cultural values

  • Demonstrated an ability to present quantitative and qualitative information, together with analysis, argument and commentary, in an appropriate form to an intended audience, including appropriate acknowledgement and referencing of sources

  • Demonstrated competence at an advanced level in developing independent, ethical research on an individual area of interest in construction, project and cost management by applying appropriate and ethical research methodologies to produce a dissertation
