Class Central Tips

This project-based course takes you through the complete design and creation process of a custom phone case for the iPhone XR using Fusion 360. Starting with an introduction to the software, you'll first model the phone itself using official technical drawings. As the course progresses, you'll apply 3D printing techniques to craft a functional, hinged phone case with attachment features. You'll start by mastering the basics of 3D modeling, followed by creating a simple phone case before advancing to more complex elements like hinges and attachment clips. Along the way, you'll develop hands-on skills to design a grip attachment for ease of handling and a foldable tripod for added functionality. Each lesson is designed to build your knowledge step-by-step, culminating in a complete, printed phone case with multiple attachments. By the end of the course, you'll have gained expert-level proficiency in Fusion 360, enabling you to create detailed, professional-grade 3D models and attachments. With your new skills, you can modify and upgrade your designs, making them as functional or aesthetic as you desire. This course is ideal for intermediate to advanced users of Fusion 360 and those with basic knowledge of 3D printing. Familiarity with technical drawing interpretation will be beneficial, though not required.

Syllabus

Introduction

In this module, we will introduce you to Fusion 360, setting the stage for a project-based learning approach. You'll start by creating a 3D phone case, followed by modeling an iPhone XR using technical drawings. The section emphasizes practical application and familiarizes you with the tools and workflows you’ll use throughout the course.

Creating the Phone Case

In this module, we will focus on designing and upgrading an iPhone XR phone case. You’ll start with a simple case design based on technical drawings and progress to more complex hinged cases. We'll also cover the creation of an attachment clip and explore ways to integrate 3D printing techniques to realize these designs in physical form.

The Grip - Attachment

In this module, we will create a grip attachment for the iPhone XR case, focusing on enhancing functionality by allowing it to be clipped to clothing or other surfaces. You'll also learn how to design and finalize the attachment system, ensuring a secure and seamless connection between the grip and the phone case.

The Foldable Tripod - Attachment

In this module, we will create and refine a foldable tripod attachment for the iPhone XR case. You'll start by designing the basic tripod structure, then move on to adding grips and other enhancements to improve functionality. This section focuses on making the phone case more versatile and practical for various applications.

Render + Conclusion

In this module, we will wrap up the course by rendering all the items you've created: the iPhone XR case, the grip attachment, and the foldable tripod. You'll also learn how to apply final touches to the attachment system and receive a thank-you note from the instructor summarizing the key lessons and project outcomes.
