This online workshop will stress both the bones of the poem – syllables, lines, meter, various stanza forms – and its flesh – the themes that have always inspired poets.Accordingly, weekly assignments will focus both on structure and on what that structure supports and encloses. Each week, in addition to workshopping student poems, we’ll be reading a few poems that exemplify expert and inventive use of structure and theme, by poets including but not limited to A.E. Stallings, Thom Gunn, Robert Pinsky, and Carl Phillips.
