DIY developers provide a less-toxic alternative to their commercial counterparts, and are a fun way to experiment with the look and feel of images. This 4-week online course introduces the possibilities of homemade black-and-white film developers, exploring: caffenol, mint, and wine in combination with other household ingredients.Through accessible lectures and visually guided demonstrations, students will explore chemical elements' impact on negative emulsion, developer building blocks, and consider how homebrew developers can enhance artistic expression. Weekly assignments composed of hands-on making and a small amount of reading and writing will be given. By the end of the course, participants will have exposed and processed three rolls of film, each with a different DIY developer opening doors to less chemically toxic practice.Suited for all levels, this workshop caters to creatives seeking to broaden their expressive toolkit for analog photography.
