More and more individuals in business and wider society realise that we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address climate change, and transition to a net zero society. This has led to a demand for climate literacy from managers and employees at all levels, working in organisations across the public, private, and third sector.

This online microcredential will help you develop your climate literacy and gain crucial skills in climate leadership. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to make an impact within your job role and area of influence. You’ll also have the know-how and green skills to help transform your organisation to achieve net zero.

Work through engaging modules at your own pace, starting any time from 7 October 2024 onwards with three specified assessment hand in dates over the academic year.

You’ll come away inspired and empowered to work towards a positive future, no matter what your industry or area of expertise. What’s more, you’ll gain an accreditation from Nottingham Business School, part of Nottingham Trent University to help certify your climate knowledge and skills.

Learn to take a systems approach to achieve systemic change

To ensure your climate actions achieve maximum impact, you’ll learn how to take a systems approach to climate change. You’ll discover ways of contextualising your actions, as you identify key levers to reduce global warming worldwide and achieve net zero.

This understanding will expose how systemic change is needed to achieve lasting solutions. You’ll delve into longer-term policies and incentives that could transform daily actions into meaningful change within your workplace.

Gain an understanding of climate change science and reducing GHG emissions

Throughout the course, you’ll develop your knowledge of climate change science. Covering key concepts like carbon sinks, carbon removal, and carbon accounting, you’ll learn more about how our climate is changing.

This knowledge will help you find solutions for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while also lowering energy costs for your organisation.

With this knowledge, you’ll identify which solutions are most appropriate for your workplace, so that you can begin to define a concrete action plan.

Make an impact with climate leadership and climate-conscious management

Having created an action plan, you can start to develop your own climate expertise and leadership skills.

Exploring various industries and areas of business, you’ll learn how climate solutions can be incorporated into many different activities. This will include topics as varied as entertainment, marketing, hospitality and food waste, the supply chain and estate management, to see how each could become more climate-conscious, with lower carbon emissions.

You’ll also explore green finance and investment strategies to understand how we can finance a better future for all.

Communicate what you know about climate change mitigation

Using your understanding of climate solutions, you’ll discover how you can engage and positively influence people more effectively through communication channels such as reports, social media, and sustainable web design.

Whether you’re starting your climate career, changing direction, or adding climate solutions to your everyday work, this microcredential will help you become an advocate for a net zero future and make cost savings on an organisational and private level.

The decision-making skills you learn on this microcredential could reduce costs for your organisation, as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions. This could enhance your reputation in your function, department, and overall organisation.

If you’ve been tasked with reducing costs on behalf of your organisation, you’ll gain the expertise you need to make informed decisions and report your recommendations to senior leadership.

You’ll also learn transferable skills that can be applied to any sector and any role, helping you stand out from the crowd.

With your enhanced understanding of climate solutions, you’ll have the skills and knowledge sought after for green jobs.

You can also apply these in your current or any future role to ensure that the climate is taken into account in all decision-making.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll be required to produce a 2000-word report applying climate change communication and leadership theory to your personal sphere of influence. Within this, you’ll identify a solution that could be implemented and draw up a plan for communicating the necessary changes.

When you feel ready, you can decide when to complete this assessment. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive your university credits once you’ve handed in your assessment on one of the following select dates:

  • Monday, 3rd February 2025
  • Monday, 12th May 2025
  • Monday, 8th September 2025

Will I receive university credits?

You’ll receive 10 UK level 7 credits in completing this online microcredential. These credits are obtained once you’ve successfully completed your assessment on multiple, select dates.

You can utilise the credits to build towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management Practice.
