This course is designed for prospective teachers, instructional aides, community volunteers and workers, or anyone interested in gaining a better understanding on supporting the educational needs of special populations. This course reviews the full range of special populations such as English Language Learners, students with disabilities, advanced learners, students who have experienced significant trauma, and students with a combination of specific instructional needs. It introduces the variations in the development of children, adolescents, and adults with special needs, and the resulting impact on families and communities. It provides an overview of historical and societal influences, laws relating to individuals with special needs, and the identification and referral process.
