Trauma is caused by transfers of energy from the environment to body systems: energy in motion causing blunt trauma, penetrating injury, friction, and shear; thermal energy that raises or lowers body temperature; or energy released in a chemical reaction. By understanding the concepts of energy transfer, healthcare providers are better prepared to more accurately anticipate patterns of injury and develop an improved plan of care to optimize outcomes.

We are so excited to have Laurie join us today to share her vast experience in trauma care! Laurie is a licensed Paramedic who earned her nursing degree as a second career in 2007. She has been certified as a Certified Emergency Nurse as well as a Certified Trauma Nurse, showing her expertise in bedside nursing care. She then expanded her education and earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice as a Clinical Nurse Leader and is currently leading the Quality Department at St. Francis Hospital on Long Island. Her varied experience has afforded her the expertise in the care of an injured patients from pre-hospital trauma care all the way through rehabilitation.

At the conclusion of this learning activity, (at least 75% of) participants will be able to discuss the concepts of kinematics and transfers of energy as they relate to patterns and mechanisms of injury and the overall impact of traumatic injury on body systems.
