Overview
Class Central Tips
This Specialization builds on the success of the Python for Everybody course and will introduce fundamental programming concepts including data structures, networked application program interfaces, and databases, using the Python programming language. In the Capstone Project, you’ll use the technologies learned throughout the Specialization to design and create your own applications for data retrieval, processing, and visualization.

This course will introduce the core data structures of the Python programming language. We will move past the basics of procedural programming and explore how we can use the Python built-in data structures such as lists, dictionaries, and tuples to perform increasingly complex data analysis. This course will cover Chapters 6-10 of the textbook “Python for Everybody”. This course covers Python 3.
-
This course will introduce students to the basics of the Structured Query Language (SQL) as well as basic database design for storing data as part of a multi-step data gathering, analysis, and processing effort. The course will use SQLite3 as its database. We will also build web crawlers and multi-step data gathering and visualization processes. We will use the D3.js library to do basic data visualization. This course will cover Chapters 14-15 of the book “Python for Everybody”. To succeed in this course, you should be familiar with the material covered in Chapters 1-13 of the textbook and the first three courses in this specialization. This course covers Python 3.
-
This course aims to teach everyone the basics of programming computers using Python. We cover the basics of how one constructs a program from a series of simple instructions in Python. The course has no pre-requisites and avoids all but the simplest mathematics. Anyone with moderate computer experience should be able to master the materials in this course. This course will cover Chapters 1-5 of the textbook “Python for Everybody”. Once a student completes this course, they will be ready to take more advanced programming courses. This course covers Python 3.
-
This course will show how one can treat the Internet as a source of data. We will scrape, parse, and read web data as well as access data using web APIs. We will work with HTML, XML, and JSON data formats in Python. This course will cover Chapters 11-13 of the textbook “Python for Everybody”. To succeed in this course, you should be familiar with the material covered in Chapters 1-10 of the textbook and the first two courses in this specialization. These topics include variables and expressions, conditional execution (loops, branching, and try/except), functions, Python data structures (strings, lists, dictionaries, and tuples), and manipulating files. This course covers Python 3.
-
In the capstone, students will build a series of applications to retrieve, process and visualize data using Python. The projects will involve all the elements of the specialization. In the first part of the capstone, students will do some visualizations to become familiar with the technologies in use and then will pursue their own project to visualize some other data that they have or can find. Chapters 15 and 16 from the book “Python for Everybody” will serve as the backbone for the capstone. This course covers Python 3.

Great course that absolutely made me believe I can do it. Professor Severance's teaching style is very fun and easy to follow. He also manages to pass on his passion of programming to the listener. Thanks a lot!

I liked this course. Perhaps I should write "I loved this course". Dr. Chuck is a good instructor and it seem very easy to understand "what is Python?", even "how computers are processing?". I learned a lot and now, I can move on the next chapter "Data Structure with Python". The reason I'm learning Python is for Data Science, I want to do things in Data analytic and BI (Business Intelligence). So good luck, you, newbie, you'll love it and I think it is right place to start with computer programming.

Excellent introduction to basic Python code, with a focus on parsing strings and data structures, connecting with data sources, and database basics. This five-course program was my first Python MOOC. The other, also taken on the Coursera.org platfo…

Course is well-structured for a beginner to programming. Personally, I breezed through the course as I've had some prior experience programming, but it did introduce me to some important Python concepts, like its data structures.
Verdict: excellent for beginners to programming, pace might be slow for those already familiar with programming. -
Extremely basic and a bit shallow. Good for absolute beginners to any and all programming, but you will have to supplement with a lot more self-study to get past the stage of rankest beginner. This course won't get you there.

The lecturer is quite good and deals a great way to teach us. A huge thanks to him and Coursera for this opportunity. I have learnt a lot of ways till now about python and yes, this course is true that "Python for everybody". Anyone can get benefite…

Excellent course for the Python enthusiasts
This specialization gives you the confidence to work on any Python program with ease. Before this, I have some experience with Python but I am not confident enough to develop any script on my own. After going through the courses, working on Assignments and Projects I gained a lot of confidence to build Python modules on my own from scratch. The course structure is well organized, Concepts are properly explained, Assignments are designed in a way to properly test your understanding of the concepts learned. -
I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and content of this course! It was easy to follow and adequately tested my understanding of this material.

Very impressive+helping
And very easy and understandable way of teaching .....very very impressive
Brilliant Job ✨✌🏻
Enjoyed a lot
Learned a lot 💯

This course helped me to refresh my skills in programming, it is very easy to use and the teacher explained it well. Thanks a lot for Michigan University for having this course. Looking forward to do more coding thru Python

The minute details are been explained in this course very smoothly. Actually I started to adore the teacher of this class. A very well explanation ever had given.
-
Outstanding way to learn Python! First, let me say that I didn't do the capstone (I kept things cost lite) but I did complete all of the non-capstone classes. These are an exceptional series of classes, and do a phenomenal job of introducing Python…
-
Excellent and easy to follow. Not trying to prove how smart he is... The problem with many MOOCs is that the instructor gets full of himself and tries to convince us how smart he/she is. Dr. Chuck was absolutely not like that, I found myself wishi…

The course is designed for both beginners and those with some programming background, making it accessible and engaging for a wide audience.
-
Everything is explained clearly and the methodology used to teach is outstandingly effective and easy to follow. I recommend it to everyone!

A well-structured course series for people with less or no programming background
Dr. Chuck's Python courses cover all the necessary information you need to successfully start coding in Python.
The modules cover more than just python programming itself. XML, JSON, web services, DB and OOP basics and more are explained in good detail to enable you to grasp how these things relate with Python.
Hands down one of the best well-structured video modules/series out there!!
(There are also bonus vids which include interviews with well known people in the computer world) -
Simplicity as its best
This guy, Charles Severance is one of the best teachers I've ever seen in any of the online tutorial course so far. What is love about him is the way he teaches in the flow which is steady and gradual and you get the knowledge in a stepwise process. Another thing is what motivates the students is the bonus chapter which includes the Computing Talks and the office hours. I don't think there is a better way of presenting the online course like Charles did. Thank you very much Charles. You are Awesome. -
The best part of this course was that it assumes that the viewers know nothing about Python unlike most of the other courses I have seen where it is assumes that the learner is familiar with at least one computer language. The Professor breaks down every concept and makes every lesson even clearer by including comprehensible diagrams. All in all, i would recommend this course to those who are starting with Python and also those who need to revise the basics before proceeding to something slightly more advanced.
