Open edX Conference 2024: Program & Speakers
The 2024 edition of the conference will be held on July 2–5 in South Africa, at Stellenbosch University.
In 2024, the Open edX Conference goes South. It will be held from July 2 to 5 at the University of Stellenbosch, which neighbors the beautiful city of Cape Town, in South Africa.
The event will be an opportunity to explore open education, with a focus on the Open edX platform. It aims to bring together educators, researchers, and developers to discuss current trends and future possibilities of the Open edX ecosystem, and by extension, of online education.
Registrations are currently open. Among others, the conference will feature proposals on topics such as instructional design, learning analytics, and software innovation, in the context of Open edX.
Program & Speakers
The program will be structured around four tracks covering all facets of Open edX and its evolving role in the online education landscape. It will span four days and include a variety of sessions ranging from lightning talks to workshops. Most notably, there will be two keynote sessions led by:
- Hatim Eltayeb, Chief Executive Officer of the African Leadership Academy, and founder of school service company Symposium.
- Jonathan Jansen, distinguished professor of education at Stellenbosch University, and president of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Call for Proposals
This year, the program will be expanded with a new track, dedicated to case studies. The conference invites proposals related to the following topics:
- Case Studies: For those who’d like to share their experience using Open edX, focusing on impactful projects and effective strategies for promoting courses.
- Pedagogy & Instruction: Targeting educators and course teams, emphasizing course design and creation, and effective approaches for teaching online.
- Trends & Impact: Inviting edtech leadership to discuss new features, trends in online learning, and analytics, as well as their significance for Open edX.
- Development & Operations: For developers, focusing on technical insights, platform integration, and best operational practices.
The session formats include 10- or 45-minute talks, and 90-minute workshops.
